Nipomo Man Faces Up to 4 Years After Beating His Partner
Jury finds 54-year-old guilty of felony violence in San Luis Obispo County

A San Luis Obispo County jury returned a guilty verdict on a domestic violence charge this week. The panel found Bob Otis Sell, a 54-year-old man from Nipomo, guilty of felony violence against an intimate partner. The guilty verdict is a key step in the legal process. The next phase involves sentencing, which is scheduled for October 5.
The incident that led to the conviction occurred on May 14. The victim dialed 911 for help after being struck multiple times in the face. The physical force was significant enough to nearly knock her unconscious. Medical reports confirm injuries to the victim's left cheek and forehead. This level of force is what elevates the case from a misdemeanor to a felony.
The legal outcome includes a potential sentence of up to four years in state prison. Sell remains out of custody on bail while he waits for the official sentencing. There is an additional legal factor that could extend that time. The court may apply an "out on bail" enhancement at sentencing. If the judge applies this, it could add two years to the total sentence. This would bring the maximum potential time to six years in custody.
San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow commented on the result. He said no one should be hurt by someone they trust. He noted that no one should be afraid in their own home. Dow stated that the criminal and victim justice system worked as intended. He said it protected the victim and held the abuser accountable. This discussion is happening as the county marks Intimate Partner Violence Awareness Month.
Dow emphasized that victims will be believed and treated with dignity. He said the office will stand with anyone who comes forward. The case against Bob Otis Sell now moves to the formal sentencing phase.
