We see a lot of quick fixes and expensive supplements sold online, especially when it comes to the midlife body. But finding evidence that actually backs up the claims is less common. New analyses presented at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes in Milan, Italy, offer a rare look at what might actually work for weight management during a particularly tricky biological transition. The study, led by Dr. Hunter Thomas Hoffman of Eli Lilly and Company in Indianapolis, examined a daily oral medication called orforglipron. It is a small molecule GLP-1 receptor agonist. The data suggests this simple pill might handle weight loss similarly for women across different life stages.

Let’s be honest. Menopause changes the game entirely. Estrogen deficiency during menopause can exacerbate obesity, which is why this study focused on women with a Body Mass Index of at least 30 kg/m² or overweight with a BMI of at least 27 kg/m². The researchers analyzed data from two specific trials, ATTAIN-1 and ATTAIN-2. ATTAIN-1 looked at people with overweight or obesity who did not have diabetes. ATTAIN-2 looked at people who had both conditions. This approach gives us a broader picture of how the medication performs.

The most striking part of this research is how consistent the results were regardless of where a woman was in her cycle of change. The study evaluated women in three distinct menopausal stages: premenopausal, perimenopausal, and postmenopausal. The number of women in each category receiving the active medication or a placebo ranged from 142 to 225. That is a solid sample size. The findings showed that women given orforglipron experienced significant and similar body weight reductions of up to 14 percent across all three groups. We are talking about a meaningful shift in the numbers.

It is not just about the scale, though the scale is important. The study also measured waist circumference and waist-to-height ratio. Researchers observed significant reductions in waist circumference of up to 12.5 cm or 4.9 inches. This is a visual change that many women find encouraging. The study tracked these changes over 72 weeks. Interestingly, up to 83 percent of women receiving the orforglipron lost at least 5 percent of their body weight. This compares favorably to the 30 percent of women receiving the placebo who achieved the same goal. You can learn more about the context of these measurements by checking the data on waist metrics and obesity.

Sometimes the science gets buried under marketing hype. It is important to remember that while this data comes from the manufacturer, Eli Lilly and Company, the results look promising for those seeking a non-invasive option. The data supports the idea that a daily pill could be a viable tool for weight management during menopause. However, always consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new regimen. The editorial team behind this report includes Sadie Harley and Andrew Zinin, who helped verify the details.
