Israel Confirms It Is Investigating Photo Showing Soldier Desecrating Virgin Mary Statue in Lebanon
Israel’s military is probing yet another soldier caught desecrating Christian symbols in southern Lebanon, the latest in a pattern that has already seen one IDF fighter jailed for smashing a crucifix in the same village.

An image of an Israeli soldier holding a lit cigarette to the mouth of a Virgin Mary statue in the Lebanese town of Dibil has forced the IDF to open an investigation, confirming the photo’s authenticity while insisting the act violates its values.
The incident, which surfaced on social media this week, occurred in a Christian village the IDF seized as part of its campaign to carve out a buffer zone against Hezbollah. Over a million Lebanese, including many indigenous Christians, have been displaced. Some communities refused IDF evacuation orders, citing Pope Leo XIV’s December appeal not to abandon their homelands.
Lieutenant Colonel Nadav Shoshani told reporters the photo was taken several weeks ago, not this month. He pledged disciplinary measures once the probe concludes. The statement stressed that the soldier’s behavior is “completely contrary to the values expected of its personnel” and that the army “respects freedom of religion and worship, as well as the holy sites and religious symbols of all religions.”
This is not the first offense in Dibil. In April an IDF soldier was photographed hammering the head off a crucifix before apparently beheading the Jesus figure. The military confirmed the image, sentenced the soldier to jail, reinforced conduct rules, and replaced the crucifix with one of noticeably different size and design. The town ultimately accepted a replica from Italian UNIFIL troops instead.
Last week the IDF admitted it “operated” on a convent whose residents had evacuated, initially claiming the building lacked obvious religious markers. It later said forces stopped further damage after spotting religious indicators and again blamed Hezbollah for using the site for terrorism.
The repetition in one Christian village raises an uncomfortable question: how many reinforcements of religious-conduct rules are required before the pattern itself becomes the story? The army keeps promising investigations and reminders. The statues and crucifixes keep getting damaged.
