A French bulldog named Cassie did what many people would do if they saw a bear approaching their home. She threw herself between the animal and her owner. The sacrifice saved the life of Jeff Wilson but cost the dog her own life. The attack happened on Sept. 19 in Northern California.

The couple is Mallory and Jeff Wilson. They are residents of Trinity County. Their home is a source of income. They run a small hospitality business. This fact matters because it explains why they are asking for money right now. When a bear attacks, you do not get paid sick leave. You do not get paid bereavement. When you are self-employed, you lose money every day you cannot work.

According to a GoFundMe page for the couple, Jeff Wilson was outside his home when a cinnamon bear attacked him. Cassie jumped in front of the bear to protect her master. The noise woke Mallory. She ran outside to help. The bear then turned its attention to her. This is how the two people ended up with serious injuries. Jeff has broken ribs and bite wounds. Mallory suffered head and face injuries as well as puncture wounds.

The fundraising page states that as of Friday evening, more than $15,000 has been raised. The money is for medical care and property damage. The money is also for the dog’s medical bills. Since the couple cannot work, they have cancelled guest reservations. The loss of income is real. This is why the fundraiser exists.

Officials say a cinnamon bear is just a type of black bear. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife notes that attacks on humans are rare. Most are defensive actions. The animal is protecting cubs or is scared. However, attacks do occur. Earlier this year, a bear reached through a window of a San Bernardino County home and clawed a 19-year-old's face and chest. The incident happened in Crestline.

Trinity County residents are cooperating with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. A spokesperson named Peter Tira declined to comment. He said the investigation is active. The couple released a statement via a friend. They said they have tremendous love and respect for the animals. They also said their priority is recovering and grieving.

To avoid bear encounters, officials recommend removing unsecured food. You should use bear-resistant lockers or food canisters. If you see a bear, do not run. Stand your ground and make noise. If it makes contact, fight back. Call authorities immediately. For more information on bear safety, you can visit the California Department of Fish and Wildlife website.
