Clouded leopard at Sacramento Zoo dies after health complications

The Sacramento Zoo officials reported the death of Rajasi, a 15-year-old clouded leopard, on Tuesday. The facility identified the animal through public statements and medical records. The death occurred just weeks after the conclusion of a medical treatment plan designed to manage his health.

Medical records indicate Rajasi began experiencing gastrointestinal issues. In July, specialists at the zoo diagnosed an inflammatory condition and hypertension. The facility moved the animal to a separate area for medication and intensive veterinary care. Zoo administrators reported that the cat's condition stabilized and there were signs of a positive response to the treatment regimen during his initial recovery phase.

On August 20, officials stated that Rajasi's condition suddenly worsened. Zoo personnel administered additional medications designed to manage nausea and physical discomfort. The administration planned a procedure for the following day. Over the course of the night, the animal's condition deteriorated further. The Sacramento Zoo confirmed the death of Rajasi on August 21. The zoo stated that the definitive cause of death requires analysis by the University of California, Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine.

The facility provided context regarding the leopard's history. Rajasi arrived at the Sacramento Zoo in early 2025 accompanied by Serai, his female partner. They arrived with six cubs from another institution. Serai died in October 2025 after dealing with a parathyroid gland mass and a leg injury. The zoo euthanized Serai, who was 14 years old.

The Sacramento Zoo lead carnivore keeper Anela Medeiros addressed the public regarding the loss. Medeiros described Rajasi as having a huge presence. The keeper noted that the animal was not a traditional big cat despite its size. Medeiros recalled specific interactions including the animal getting really big eyes when spotting a goat milk-filled squeeze bottle and the hard-earned chuff and head rub against the mesh that he bestowed upon keepers only when he felt it was necessary.

Clouded leopards inhabit the forests of South and Southeast Asia. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the species as vulnerable due to severe habitat loss and poaching. In the wild, these animals typically live 11 to 13 years. Captive environments generally support a lifespan of 11 to 15 years.

The zoo stated that an autopsy will determine the final cause of death. The University of California, Davis Weill School of Veterinary Medicine will handle this process.
