Best of the West awards honor CalMatters’ ‘extensive,’ ‘rigorous’ and ‘incredible’ journalism
CalMatters just swept regional journalism prizes for work judges called 'extensive,' 'rigorous' and 'incredible', a reminder that depth still beats volume in an era of shrinking newsrooms.

CalMatters collected top honors in the 2026 Best of the West contest for reporting that judges praised as "extensive," "rigorous" and "incredible." The nonprofit’s sweep across multiple categories underscores a stubborn fact: serious, sustained journalism still stands out when most outlets chase clicks.
The contest, which covers 14 Western states, was founded in 1987 specifically to reward journalistic excellence and defend freedom of information. That mission feels more urgent now, as newsroom budgets contract and public trust erodes. CalMatters’ recognition validates the model of non-profit, accountability-focused coverage that many legacy papers have abandoned.
Judges singled out the depth of CalMatters’ enterprise reporting rather than quick-hit daily stories. The wins arrive at a moment when California’s biggest challenges, housing, water, education, governance, demand exactly the kind of patient, evidence-led work that earned these awards. Surface-level coverage cannot substitute for it.
The Best of the West prizes function as a regional benchmark, not a national vanity contest. By prevailing in a field that includes newsrooms from every state in the West, CalMatters demonstrated that focused regional reporting can outperform larger, more scattered operations. The quotes from judges read like a quiet rebuke to the industry’s drift toward commentary over shoe-leather.
What matters next is whether this recognition translates into sustained reader and philanthropic support. Awards are flattering, but they do not file public records requests or sit through marathon hearings. The real test is whether the news desert outside Sacramento and San Francisco gets any smaller because of the work these prizes celebrate.
