Anthropic Signs SpaceX Colossus 1 Deal For Major Claude Compute Expansion
Anthropic just locked up over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs and 300 megawatts from Elon Musk’s SpaceX Colossus 1, proof that even Musk’s own AI empire needs outside customers to fill its racks.

Anthropic’s fresh deal with SpaceX hands the AI lab exclusive rights to every watt and GPU inside the Colossus 1 data center. The pact delivers more than 300 megawatts and over 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs inside a month, instantly easing pressure on Claude Pro, Claude Max, Claude Code, and the Claude API.
The arrangement is more than a capacity grab. Industry chatter has suggested Musk-linked AI data centers, including those tied to xAI, have sat under-utilized at times. Anthropic’s move supplies SpaceX with a heavyweight external workload, turning Colossus 1 from speculative infrastructure into a revenue-generating asset that could matter if SpaceX ever eyes an IPO.
Anthropic is hardly betting the farm on Musk. It already holds a deal with Amazon for up to 5 gigawatts, including nearly 1 gigawatt online by the end of 2026, an agreement with Google and Broadcom for another 5 gigawatts starting in 2027, a $30 billion strategic partnership with Microsoft and NVIDIA, and a $50 billion U.S. infrastructure commitment via Fluidstack. Claude already runs across AWS Trainium, Google TPUs, and NVIDIA GPUs; Colossus 1 simply thickens the GPU slice outside the usual hyperscalers.
Both sides are already eyeing the next orbit. Anthropic has expressed interest in partnering with SpaceX on multiple gigawatts of space-based AI compute, though no timeline or technical details were offered. The current terrestrial contract at least gives them a working relationship on which to build.
Expansion isn’t limited to American soil. Enterprise customers in finance, healthcare, and government demand in-region inference to satisfy data-residency rules. Anthropic’s Amazon collaboration is already adding capacity in Asia and Europe, and the company says it will pick democratic jurisdictions with stable legal frameworks while weighing supply-chain security. It has also pledged to cover any rise in U.S. consumer electricity prices caused by its data centers and is exploring similar community commitments abroad.
The real tension is whether these frantic, multi-gigawatt bets can keep pace with model growth before power, chips, or regulatory pushback run out. For now, Anthropic buys breathing room and SpaceX buys legitimacy; the orbital dreams will have to wait for the racks to fill first.
