19-year-old lay in wait, stabbed California gallery owner over and over, authorities say
A 19-year-old lay in wait and stabbed a 73-year-old artist more than a dozen times in what police dismissed as random violence, exposing how quickly California’s coastal towns have normalized brutal, motiveless attacks.

A 19-year-old waited for Rachell Summers, then stabbed the 73-year-old artist repeatedly inside her own gallery in Capitola. Authorities called it a "random act of violence," the kind of antiseptic label that now accompanies too many killings in California.
The attack happened Monday. Summers, who had spent decades as a working artist, did not know her killer. Police have not released a motive beyond that shrug of randomness, nor have they explained how a teenager could lie in wait and carry out such a sustained assault in a small beach town without drawing earlier attention.
What stands out is the age gap and the sheer persistence of the violence. Summers was more than half a century older than her attacker. The repeated stabbing suggests something personal even if investigators insist otherwise. Capitola’s residents are left wondering why a place known for art galleries and calm surf now requires metal detectors at the door or simply accepting that some deaths will be filed under "random."
This is not an isolated horror story. It is one more data point in a state where motiveless attacks on the vulnerable have become background noise. Officials label them random to close the case quickly, but the label does nothing to reassure the artists, shopkeepers, and elderly who actually keep these towns alive.
The question authorities have not answered is whether "random" still means unpredictable or whether it now means we have stopped looking for patterns until the next gallery owner, the next senior, is found bleeding out on the floor.
