President Trump pulled the plug on Project Freedom less than two days after launch, choosing diplomatic talks over securing the Strait of Hormuz with U.S. Central Command assets. The abrupt pause, announced amid a fragile ceasefire with Iran, signals that military pressure is giving way to negotiations even as regional allies show hesitation.

Prediction markets captured the shift immediately. The chance of a formal U.S. declaration of war on Iran by year-end fell to 6.5 percent from 8 percent a week earlier. At the same time, the probability of a U.S.-Iran nuclear deal by June 30 climbed to 36 percent from 28 percent, while the odds of Trump agreeing to Iranian demands by May 31 settled at 32.5 percent after a recent dip.

The operation had been launched on May 4-5 in response to the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict. Trump cited "diplomatic progress towards a real agreement" as the reason for halting it. That language, combined with the rapid reversal, suggests the administration sees more upside in concessions than in prolonged naval presence near one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints.

Markets are treating the pause as meaningful but not decisive. The “US Declaration of War on Iran” contract showed only moderate movement, while the nuclear-deal contract gained clearer bullish momentum. A separate contract on Iranian demands by May 31 also reflects tempered expectations after dropping from 36 percent in the prior 24 hours.

What happens next will turn on whether negotiating teams produce a joint framework, whether Saudi Arabia lines up behind or against any deal, and whether Trump’s public statements continue to emphasize diplomacy over military options. The speed of the reversal on Project Freedom leaves little room for pretending the administration is still committed to the original show of force.

The real test is whether the higher odds of a June deal translate into an actual agreement, or whether the pause simply buys time before the next escalation.
